美国开设纯粹的政治学专业硕士的学校非常少，美国政治学专业一般分为如下几类：American Politics 美国政治学，Comparative Politics比较政治学，International Politics 国际政治学，Politics Theory 政治学理论，Political Methodology 政治学方法论；这些专业的申请，都需要gre，而不是gmat。

　　在申请的过程之中，很多同学会发现有政治学，尤其是美国政治学的硕士学位的学校非常非常的少。很多想申请硕士的同学都会选择申请MPA， MPP等学位。比如哈佛大学，肯尼迪政府学院提供的硕士学位项目有公共政策硕士(MPP)、公共政策/城市规划硕士(MPP/UP)、两年制公共管理硕士(MPA)和在职公共管理硕士(Mid-Career MPA) ;与政治相关的博士项目有公共政策学博士，此外还有与文理学院合办的其他博士项目。

　　普林斯顿大学，芝加哥大学等学校，也都是只有政治的博士学位。像杜克大学，虽然有政治学硕士的设置， 但是学校的政治学系以培养博士研究生为主。为鼓励申请者攻读博士学位，校方对每个被录取的新生均考虑给予不同数量的奖学金。而以政治学硕士作为攻读目标的申请者将无法获得任何学校提供的经济资助。

　　申请美国政治学，除了要有很高的托福，GRE成绩之外，大多数学校还要求学生在申请的时候提交自己的writing sample. 申请博士的同学，为了提高自己的科研背景和实力，申请之前，一定要多浏览APSR，AJPS，JOP等政治领域学术期刊，另外Annual Review of Political Science也很管用。这样的来充实自己，对以后去申请院校时候和教授套磁也非常有帮助。
